Website speed and SEO basics (without the jargon)
Fast pages and clear titles help real people find you. Here is a short, honest primer on what matters for small business sites.
SEO consultants love acronyms. Small business owners love phone calls and form fills. Good news: the overlap between “rank better” and “help humans” is bigger than the industry admits.
Speed: why it is a business metric
Slow sites lose patience before they lose rankings. A page that takes five seconds on mobile is a page where people hit Back and call your competitor.
You do not need perfect Lighthouse scores. Start with:
- Reasonable image sizes — Hero photos do not need to be 6000px wide.
- Fewer third-party scripts — Every chat widget, pixel, and map embed adds weight.
- Caching and CDN — We put a CDN in front of production for a reason.
- Stable layout — Buttons that jump when fonts load frustrate everyone (and hurt CLS).
We ship with performance-minded defaults; ongoing care catches regressions when marketing adds a new embed.
SEO: what still matters in 2026
Search engines reward clear intent and trust, not keyword stuffing.
Titles and descriptions. Each important page should have a unique <title> and meta description. Our public pages follow Page title · site name so results look consistent in Google.
One main topic per page. Services, pricing, and contact each deserve their own URL — not three offers fighting on the homepage.
Headings that match the promise. If the H1 says “Website care in Vermont,” the body should deliver that — not generic agency fluff.
Internal links. Blog posts should point to /contact, /pricing, or relevant service sections with plain language anchors.
The boring technical bits. HTTPS, a sitemap, sensible redirects, and admin pages that search engines should ignore. We bake that in so you are not buying a separate “SEO plugin” for the basics.
Content beats tricks
The posts that help long-term are specific: answers you already give on the phone, a page per real service, a title that matches the offer. Generic “10 SEO hacks” posts age badly and attract the wrong readers.
A minimal audit you can do today
- Google your brand — does the homepage title match what you want?
- Open the site on your phone on cellular — does the hero load in one beat?
- Submit the contact form — does email arrive in under a minute?
- Pick your money page — does the title describe the offer in plain English?
If any answer is no, fix that before buying another SEO tool.
How we help
Build and redesign projects bake in findable structure from day one. Care keeps titles, uptime, and small content fixes from rotting. Builder tiers give you a fast subdomain host while you grow into a custom domain.
