Redesign vs refresh: when to rebuild and when to iterate

A new theme is not a strategy. Here is when a refresh (copy, photos, speed, form) is enough — and when the IA or CMS is the real problem.

Redesign vs refresh: when to rebuild and when to iterate

Owners ask for a redesign when they are tired of looking at the site. That feeling is real. It is not always the right spend.

A refresh keeps the URL map and the stack. A rebuild changes information architecture, templates, or the CMS. Mixing them up is how you pay for a new coat of paint on a house with a bad floor plan.

Refresh first when

  • People can find Services, Pricing, and Contact in one tap on a phone.
  • The contact form still lands in an inbox you read.
  • The problem is stale facts, weak photos, slow images, or a headline that does not say what you do.
  • You are afraid to click Update — that is a care rhythm, not a new theme.

A good refresh is a few focused passes: copy, compression, form test, NAP, one stronger case or photo. Care ($79/mo) is built for those small fixes. A designer-week of “make it pop” is not.

Rebuild when

SignalWhy a new coat of paint fails
IA is a mazeServices buried, three competing CTAs, no one URL per offer
The CMS is the trapYou cannot change a price without a developer or a page-builder collision
Mobile is unusableTap targets, popups, or a layout that only worked on a 2019 iMac
URLs are a junk drawer/page123, duplicate services, no redirects plan for a move
The stack is wrongYou need WordPress plugins you do not have — or you are on WordPress for a five-page brochure

Rebuilds are scoped projects (contact), not the Care add-on. Launch and hosting still apply if the public domain is moving. See what to expect at launch if you are also changing hosts.

A 20-minute self-test

  1. Open the site on your phone. Can a stranger tell what you sell in five seconds?
  2. Submit the form. Did email arrive?
  3. Search your business name. Does the title match the offer?
  4. Try to change hours in the CMS. If that is a ticket, the CMS is part of the problem.

If 1–3 fail and 4 is easy, refresh. If 4 is a nightmare, rebuild (or move stacks) is on the table.

What we will not do

We will not sell a full redesign because the palette is last year’s. We will not pretend Care is a rebuild. We will tell you honestly whether copy, Care, a refresh, or Custom is the fit.

Pricing for builder, Care, and Launch. Request a quote if the floor plan is the issue.
