You do not need to shop for a VPS

Rented servers are a shopping list for people who run boxes. Here is what a small business actually needs instead.

You do not need to shop for a VPS

A VPS is a rented Linux computer in a data center. People who run websites for a living argue about vendors and instance sizes the way car people argue about tires.

You can spend a weekend on that. It will not make a customer call you.

What you need instead of a VPS quote

If your site is five pages and a form, you do not need to know a SKU name. You need a launch plan and a handoff list so the registrar login is not in one person’s head.

When a VPS is the right shape (for us, not for you)

We rent servers so your site can live on a box we operate: static HTML from the builder, or WordPress we maintain. That is our problem. Region, RAM, and list price are operator work. Prices move. “Free” credits come and go. None of that should land in your inbox.

What you should ask:

  • Is the site on our hosting, your old host, or still on a DevThunder subdomain?
  • Who renews the domain?
  • Who gets the downtime email?

If those three have answers, you are ahead of most launches.

What we would not recommend you do

  • Rent a cheap box because a video said it is “the same as hosting.”
  • Put the website and “the whole company IT” on one machine.
  • Chase trial credits as a business continuity plan.
  • Pick a host because the first year of the domain is two dollars.

Shared “unlimited hosting” from a random brand is the other trap: no real access when something breaks, noisy neighbors, and a transfer saga when you leave.

What to do this week

  1. Publish on DevThunder if you are still drafting — that URL is real HTTPS.
  2. Reserve yourbrand.com if you have not (how to keep a domain).
  3. When you want the brand on the door, request Launch or a hosting quote. We will not send you a cloud shopping cart.
